Dr. Abrudescu is the Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at Queens Hospital Center. Dr. Abrudescu trained in Rheumatology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. She is an Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn Medical School at Mt. Sinai, at NYCOM and at St. George’s University School of Medicine. Dr. Abrudescu has authored many articles and abstracts with QHC residents that are published in peer-reviewed journals.
Adina Valceanu, MD

Dr. Valceanu trained in Internal Medicine at Queens Hospital Center. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is presently a teaching attending in the Department of Ambulatory Care at QHC. Her major interests include resident teaching, health literacy and cultural diversity.
Sanjiv Bakshi, MBBS, MD
Cardiology
Dr. Bakshi trained in Internal Medicine at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he was named “Internal Medicine Resident of the Year”, and in Cardiovascular Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Cardiology. He has been named “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” at Queens Hospital Center; his primary interests are in heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiac imaging and resident education.
Tayyaba Bashir, MD
Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Bashir graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College and went on to receive her M.D. at SUNY Downstate. She trained in Internal Medicine at Long Island Jewish and then in Hematology and Oncology at North Shore University Hospital, where she was Chief Fellow. Her primary interests are concentrated around breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Bashir currently holds the academic title of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. She has published extensively in peer review journals.
Charles Berman, MD

Dr. Berman attended MIT and then received his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine. He trained in Internal Medicine at Westchester Medical Center and in Infectious Diseases at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. An accomplished clinician and teacher in all areas of Infectious Diseases, he is presently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.
G. Lara Collura, MD
Cardiology
Dr. Collura received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, graduating magna cum laude, and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Collura went on to complete her Internal Medicine training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and her Cardiovascular Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center and at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Dr. Collura specializes in non-invasive cardiac imaging.
Dr. Collura is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Echocardiography, Vascular Ultrasound and Cardiac CT. Her clinical interests include echocardiography, cardiac stress testing and general cardiology.
ANGEL E. DE LA CRUZ, MD, FCCP, FAASM, D, ABSM

Dr. De La Cruz trained in Internal Medicine at Raritan Bay Medical Center in New Jersey, in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Queens Hospital Center, and in Sleep Medicine at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Dr. De La Cruz is an active participant in the Internal Medicine residency program, teaching residents and students during their rotations in the Critical Care Unit and the Pulmonary Consultation Service. He has a special interest in diseases such as sepsis with shock, acute respiratory failure, asthma, COPD, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome and narcolepsy. He is fluent in Spanish.

Jean Fleischman, MD

Jean Fleischman, M.D., FCCP is a graduate of the NYU School of Medicine; she completed her Internal Medicine residency at NYU at the Manhattan VA and her fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at Bellevue Hospital Center. Over the years, Dr. Fleischman has served Queens Hospital Center as Chief of the Division of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine and as Associate Director of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Fleischman has most recently been appointed to the position of Deputy Medical Director for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement.
Dr. Fleischman’s interests are focused on quality assurance, performance improvement and patient safety. Her efforts have lead to enhancements in intensive care unit management and improvements in hospital-wide quality of care and patient safety. Dr. Fleishman has been a respected mentor for both residents and medical students.
Leelavathi Kasturi, MD

Dr. Leelavathi Kasturi received her medical degree from Mysore Medical College, India. She completed her residency training and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University Hospitals for The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY.
Dr. Kasturi is board certified in Internal Medicine & Gastroenterology. Her clinical interests include General Gastroenterology including ERCP. She is especially interested in increasing colorectal screening awareness leading to an increase in colorectal screening rates in the community.

Dr. Lopez trained in Internal Medicine at the Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens and then stayed on to serve as Chief Medical Resident and as Pulmonary Fellow. Dr. Lopez then trained in Critical Care at Saint Vincent’s Hospital.
Dr. Lopez serves as Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care at QHC and is Director of the Medical Intensive Care, the Pulmonary Consult and Bronchoscopy Services, the PFT Laboratory, and the outpatient Chest and Tuberculosis Clinics.
Dr. Lopez is a key educator in the medical residency program at Queens Hospital Center. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care, and is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Pearlstein completed her residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Vincent’s Hospital. She presently serves as Medical Director of the Queens Hospital Center Palliative Care Service. She has a strong interest in medical bioethics; she completed the Certificate Program in Medical Ethics and Medical Humanities and is a member of the Ethics Committee. Dr. Pearlstein is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and has been twice awarded the Teaching Attending of the Year Award by the QHC housestaff.
David Reich, MD

Dr. Reich graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical School and completed his residency, Chief Residency and Endocrinology fellowship at Winthrop University Hospital. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.
Dr. Reich is actively involved in the Diabetes Center of Excellence and in housestaff and medical student education. His clinical interests include general endocrinology, diabetes mellitus, the metabolic syndrome, the dyslipidemias and endocrine-related hypertension.

Dr. Sachmechi is the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Queens Hospital Center and Director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence. He is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.
Dr. Sachmechi is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Endocrinology, American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology, and is a member of the American Diabetes Association and the Endocrine Society. He has authored numerous abstracts, a book and book chapter, and many articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
Asad Sahibzada, MD

Born in Sioux Falls, Dr. Sahibzada trained in Internal Medicine at the University of South Dakota and then did his Critical Care fellowship at the Oregon Health and Science University and his Pulmonary fellowship at New York Hospital Queens. His major interest, aside from Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care, is in teaching residents.
Ydens Valeus, MD

Dr. Valeus is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, having trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut. Prior to coming to Queens Hospital Center, Dr. Valeus helped run the Ambulatory Medicine Clinic at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. He is presently on the hospitalist teaching faculty at QHC and a visiting lecturer at the York College Physician Assistant Program.
Dr. Valeus helps organize annual health fairs in Hollis Queens and health seminars in churches in the community. He is fluent in Creole, French, and Spanish.

Debra Ann Ferman, MD

Dr. Ferman graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Biology. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and graduated with General Honors. She graduated from the New York University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was the recipient of the Humanism and Professionalism Award. She completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at North Shore University Hospital. She is the author of two book chapters on thrombocytopenia. She supervises the adult Sickle Cell Program at QHC. Her clinical interests include cancer prevention, solid tumors, and benign hematology.

Dr.Theo Trandafirescu is an attending in the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care at Queens Hospital Center. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Physicians, and Society of Internal Medicine. He is also the President of Romanian Medical Society of New York. He received Best Resident Award, Certificate of Appreciation in June 2000 and March 2001. In addition, Dr. Trandafirescu has authored or coauthored abstracts and published in peer-reviewed, and has given several Grand Rounds lectures.

Dr. Celeste Defillo-Lopez obtained her medical degree at La Universidad National Pedro Henriquez Urena (UNPHU) in the Dominican Republic. After graduation, she worked as a primary care physician in the Dominican Republic. After emigrating to the United States, she completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens. Dr. Defillo-Lopez joined NYC H+H/Queens to serve as an attending physician in the Ambulatory Care Clinic and has now transitioned to Hospitalist Medicine. She is renowned for providing the highest quality, detail oriented and compassionate care.

Dr. Camitta holds board certifications in Internal Medicine from ABIM and Clinical Informatics from ABPM. Dr. Camitta’s professional interests include healthcare leadership and medical education, innovative care delivery model transformation, AI/ML predictive models in healthcare, health equity and social determinants of health to reduce disparities. Dr. Saliaj completed her residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai/Bronx VA, and holds a master’s in Public Health from the University at Albany.
In education, she is renowned for her engaging lectures, hands-on teaching, and personalized mentorship of medical students and residents. Her extensive research experience includes clinical trials, peer-reviewed studies, and award-winning presentations. Fluent in five languages, Dr. Saliaj excels in communicating with a diverse patient population and consistently demonstrates awareness of patient equality and equity, reflecting in positive patient outcomes.

Dr. Sanna Salam is an attending physician currently working at NYC H+H/Queens after graduating from our program in 2024. After completing her postgraduate education in Pakistan and residency training, she gained diverse experience working in Dubai. Dr. Salam has published multiple research articles in endocrinology, cardiology and infectious disease in indexed journals, showcasing her commitment to advancing medical knowledge. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and scuba diving, reflecting her passion for adventure and exploration.

Larry Sonna, MD
Pulmonary Medicine/ Critical Care
Dr. Larry Sonna is a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician who has a broad experience base that includes work in academic centers, the military, research, extensive locum tenens work, and private practice.
Dr. Sonna is a US Citizen who was raised abroad (Mexico) and speaks Spanish. After completing his college education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, he was accepted at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, where he did his medical training. This included MD and PhD degrees (completed in 1989), internship in Surgery at Johns Hopkins, residency in Internal Medicine at one of the Johns Hopkins affiliates (Francis Scott Key Medical Center, now called Johns Hopkins Bayview), and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care (also at Johns Hopkins).
During training, he served honorably in the Maryland Army National Guard and transitioned to active duty Army in 1996. He was stationed at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA, and performed both clinical work and research collaborations with Brigham and Women’s Hospital studying human gene expression responses to stress.
In 2005, Dr. Sonna left the military and after a brief trial of private practice, returned to academic medicine at the University of Maryland as an assistant professor in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He worked as an attending physician in the University of Maryland Hospital’s ICU, had some clinical responsibilities at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, and continued his research work.
Dr. Sonna started doing locum tenens work to broaden his clinical experience in 2007. In 2009, he transitioned to a career focused mainly on clinical practice. Through 2022, he worked in a wide variety of hospital settings, including work as a hospitalist, intensivist, and pulmonologist in several different states, in hospitals ranging from LTACHs to referral centers. He also earned an MBA from the University of Kansas, graduating with honors in 2021.
During the COVID pandemic, Dr. Sonna came to New York to help at NYC H+H/Queens. He was so impressed by the care at NYC H+H/Queens that he asked for full-time employment here and has been working full-time with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care since May 2022.
Ryan Quirk, MD
Hospice/ Palliative Care
Dr. Ryan Quirk graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens, where she was Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Quirk completed her Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. In addition to being a member of our Palliative Medicine interdisciplinary team, she serves as the Assistant Chief of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Quirk is actively involved in the teaching of the residents and medical students as she is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at both Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and St. George’s University School of Medicine. Her passion for medical education has led her to the position of NYC H+H/Queens Academic Advisor for St. George’s University School of Medicine.
Beenish Noor, MD

Dr. Beenish Noor received her medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at NYC H+H/Harlem Hospital. Additionally, she completed her hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and transplant nephrology electives at NY Presbyterian/Columbia Hospital. She greatly enjoys teaching residents, fellows and her patients. Her professional interests include AKI and glomerular pathologies. She looks forward to welcoming new residents and inspiring a passion for Nephrology.

Dr. Lydia Liz Fuentes Rivera obtained her medical degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Universidad Central del Caribe, affiliated with Hospital Universitario Ramón Ruiz Arnau in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She pursued a Nephrology fellowship at the University of South Florida in Tampa, USA, where she also served as Chief Fellow and was honored with the Fellow of the Year award. She has board certifications in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. She is an active member of several esteemed professional organizations, such as the American College of Physicians, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American Society of Nephrology.
Jazila Mantis, MD

Dr. Jazila Mantis trained in Internal Medicine at State University of New York Upstate Medical University and completed her fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at North Shore University Hospital, Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Mantis is an associate professor of medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is the Chief of Division of Infectious Diseases and Medical Director of the HIV Program at NYC H+H/Queens. Dr. Mantis is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and her interests include consultative Infectious Diseases, treatment of HIV/AIDS, program development and administration.
Most Sirajum Munira, MD
Cardiology
Dr. Munira received her medical degree from Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh, and trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H&H/South Brooklyn, where she also subsequently served as Chief Medical Resident. She then completed a postgraduate fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Maimonides Medical Center, NYC. She is an ABIM diplomat and Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular disease, Echocardiogram, and Nuclear Cardiology, and she is also certified in vascular imaging. She has also achieved certification in Cardiac CT imaging from Johns Hopkins Hospital, Maryland. After graduation, she took a position as an attending physician in the Division of Cardiology at NYC H & H/Lincoln. She was very involved in teaching and indenturing the medical residents. She held the academic title of Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University since 2018. She received an Award of Excellence in Academic Teaching from NYC H+ H /Lincoln in 2020. In November 2020, she joined the Department of Cardiology at NYC H+H/Queens. She became Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai in 2023 and is a key educator in the medical residency program at Queens Hospital Center. Dr. Munira is a media personality in the Bengali community in NYC, a regular health advisor, and attends a health awareness program on Television in NYC. She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Munira has authored numerous abstracts and articles published in peer-reviewed international journals. She is a Cardiology Editorial Board Member of two international journals.

Dr. Negar Niknam earned her medical degree in Tehran, Iran and trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens, where she was Chief Medical Resident. She went on to complete a Gastroenterology fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center in New York followed by additional training in Interventional Gastroenterology at the University of South Florida. Currently, she fulfills her role as an advanced endoscopist/gastroenterologist at NYC H+H/Queens where she is delighted to work with and teach medical students, residents and fellows.
Ghulamullah Shahzad, MD

Dr. Ghullamullah Shazad, a native of Pakistan, earned his medical degree from the Dow University of Health Sciences in 1998. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in internal medicine at the VA Bronx at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Staten Island University Hospital in 2008, followed by his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Nassau University Medical Center in 2015 and advanced fellowship from Sunny Downstate Medical Center. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the Dr. Shazad attained board certification in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology & Hepatology through the American Board of Internal Medicine. Additionally, he is the CEO of Intercity Gastroenterology in Fresh Meadows, New York. Intercity Gastroenterology provides diagnosis and treatment for gastrointestinal conditions, abdominal pain, constipation, peptic Ulcer, Gastritis, Difficult in swallowing, GERD, H pylori, Barrett’s esophagus, Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, Inflammatory diseases, Irritable bowel disease, diarrhea, Polyps, and wart’s and rectal bleeding.
Dr. Shahzad has been involved in training medical residents as well as medical students from various background and from many parts of the world. Dr. Shahzad has been working with many United stated based NGOS to work in rural and urban areas of Pakistan. Currently, his interest is to establish educational support and training centers across Pakistan for mentally challenged populations of all age groups (kids and adults with Autism, Cerebral palsy and other neurodegenerative disorders) to bring them in mainstream and live independently or with minimal support.

She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. She is Board Certified in Integrative Medicine through The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS). She is a 500-hour certified adult yoga teacher from The Omega Institute, Lifetime Fitness and Absolute Yoga. She is also a certified teacher in Primordial Meditation through The Deepak Chopra Center. Leia’s central focus is lifestyle medicine which recognizes how powerful factors such as food, exercise, stress, sleep and environment impact’s one’s health. Leia works on the premise that one plan does not work for everyone and she treats every person as their unique self and uses the best approach for them to be the healthiest they can be.
Mashal Durrani, MD
Ambulatory Care
Dr. Mashal Durrani graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery followed by her medical degree from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Pakistan. She then completed 1-year of training in medicine and surgery to become a member of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Dr. Durrani trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens and stayed at our institution to work in the Ambulatory Care Department.
Gray Ballinger, MD

Dr. Gray Ballinger is an alumnus of Eastern Virginia Medical School. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York in 2021 and now specializes in adult primary care.
Rishanki Jha, MD
Ambulatory Care
Dr. Jha completed her internal medicine residency at St Elizabeth hospital center, Ohio. She is board certified in Internal medicine and currently has an attending role at the Queens hospital center, ambulatory care division. She is passionate about being a part of the Asthma Champions group, resident education, evidence-based medicine, and antibiotic stewardship.
Suhasini Jonnavithula, MD

Dr. Suhasini Jonnavithula trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens. She was in private practice for over 20 years and joined the Ambulatory Care Clinic at NYC H+H/Queens in 2018 as a full time attending. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and her interests include classical Indian music.
Sameer Misra, MD

Dr. Sameer Misra earned his medical degree in India and trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens and Long Island Jewish Medical Center/New Hyde Park. Currently, he is an attending physician in department of ambulatory care with appointment as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His interests include diabetes, health care delivery systems, health care policy and cross-cultural health care delivery systems.
Esther Schmidt-Pines, MD

Dr. Esther Schmidt-Pines is a graduate of Sackler School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai South Nassau where she also served as Chief Resident. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. She is passionate about medical education, and enjoys precepting in the primary care and geriatric clinics.
Milana Zirkiyeva, MD

Dr. Milana Zirkiyeva graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and a member of the American College of Physicians. Currently, she is a member of our teaching faculty in the Ambulatory Care Clinic and received the Teaching Attending of the Year Award for Ambulatory Care in 2024. Her goal is to continue expanding knowledge through research with the goal to be able to share this knowledge with our patients and therefore improve our patient’s health.
Mark Richman, MD, MPH, FACEP, FACP

Mark Richman, MD, MPH, FACEP, FACP is an Internal Medicine Primary Care Physician at the Queens Hospital Center Department of Ambulatory Care and Instructor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, as well as an Emergency Medicine Physician at the Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He was previously a Physician Innovator, Assistant Medical Director, Director of Primary Care, Patient Safety Officer, Performance Improvement Officer, Clinical Information Technology Officer, and Medical Director of Employee Health at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, while an Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Before working for Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, he worked with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ Clinical Resource Management Program, leveraging information technology to develop novel, evidence-based inpatient and outpatient pathways, protocols, and disease management programs. He is an advisor to the stem cell biotechnology start-up company Synova Life Sciences and Course Director for three Hofstra courses: 1. Introduction to Clinical Research Methodology, Public Health, and the Hospital, 2. Human-Centered Design in Healthcare Innovation, and 3. Clinical Applications of Anatomy and Physiology. After completing his Bachelors in English Literature at Stanford, Dr. Richman obtained his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his Emergency Medicine training at Emory University and a Masters of Public Health in International Health/Humanitarian Relief at Johns Hopkins University. After serving as medical advisor for a maternal-child nutrition research project in Bangladesh, Dr. Richman completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
Jasmine Sandhu, MD

Dr. Jasmine Sandhu earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. During her clinical medical school years, she rotated through NYC H+H/Queens which inspired her to train in Internal Medicine at NYC H+H/Queens. She completed her Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Queens and then returned to NYC H+H/Queens as an attending physician. She looks forward to welcoming new residents each year in the hopes of helping our Queens community all together.
